Since 2017, CYSOA (Cyprus School of Architecture) held a series of architectural competitions for small objects for implementation on the public beach of Geroskipou. We present the beach cinema project created in the framework of the competition by the architectural bureau KATARSIS Architects (Russia, St. Petersburg), which won first place.

Sky Cinema

Geroskipou beach itself is a melancholy long space, gray sand between the sea and the road with fields, but this is precisely what its charm consists in – there is air, space, emptiness. And this sensation immediately determined the direction of thoughts – a light permeable structure that will not interfere with the perception of space, distort it and block it. No armchairs or bulky blackouts – just a screen and simple zoning.

The most natural way to spend time on the beach is to lie and look at the sea and the sky. In particular, at night – to the stars. Think of the intangible and the sublime. The projection of the film onto the clouds is perfect. Sky cinema … Spectators lie directly on the sand, and look up at the screen.

Our cinema is an image of real, poetic cinema, the best examples of which are a kind of dreams. The film unfolds somewhere in height, like a dream, and the screen itself becomes a canopy, a material projection of the imagination, its thin translucent fabric separates the viewer from starry infinity.

The design is simple and elegant – three racks, three rings, the upper of which is mounted on racks, the other two are suspended on it and stretched by ropes to the ground. The screen is a canopy of translucent fabric thrown over the rings with the motifs of traditional Cypriot lace reinterpreted in the pattern.
